Our ancient farmhouse has a has three small waterfalls that are quite close to our front porch. At any given time of year you can sit on the porch and listen to the falls pour out from the hillside. A pathway has been worn over time that takes you right down the hill to this.
Small falls rush out of the hillside and form a creek with small pools of water that hold small creatures of all sorts. While walking and taking pictures I ran across this piece of dishware that I think it the bottom of a teacup. There is actually some embossing on it that didn't show up on camera. 
The remnants of an old spring house are also in this area of our farm. In the corner you can see a small stream of water that flows from the ground. Looking for pottery shards is a favorite activity here in late spring/early summer. After that nature rules and tall weeds keep us from the area. Not to mention the crazy insect population. Searching for shards after a heavy rain is usually our best bet. The rain washes out a lot of treasures just waiting to be found.
We also have a cave on our property, which is quite common in our area. Typically the dog in this photo climbs up the rocks and runs into the cave. Then, he dashes back out about a minute later. 
We have found a basketful of pottery shards in and around the old spring house. Pictured below are some of the larger pieces. Bits of dishes, glassware, mason jars, milk glass, and stoneware crocks have all been found. There is also a spout pictured on the right hand side of this photo. 
On the day I photographed the falls I also found this heart shaped rock. That day was also my daughter's birthday.
A good sign I think. 
This is a beautiful spot. I think if I lived near there....you would find me there often! What a pleasant getaway.

ReplyDeleteI love places like that! It would be neat if somewhere there were photographs of the structure when it was in use. What a great place to explore! I wonder what a metal detector would reveal? That would be an experience!
ReplyDeleteTwo years ago I looked for pictures of what was across the small road from where my grandmother lived when she first came to this country. There was a large rock foundation similar to the one you have, and it was next to a large stream. It turns out that it was a water powered grain mill. We even were able to locate pictures of it while it was in use. Very cool!

ReplyDeleteWe find all sorts of ceramic and iron bits around our place, usually after a rain -- like yourself. I have a large jar where I keep them all. :)

ReplyDeleteWhen we bought the cabin property years ago, I loved walking the woods to find treasures. The best was a little brown pottery jug, fully in tact, that now holds flowers on the patio table each summer. We still find bits and pieces that have not decayed. The woods must have been a dumping ground at one time.

What a wonderful spot...I think you live in the greatest place! I love the sound of water and we have a small stream that runs near our house in the winter and Spring only...we rock hunt there. The heart shaped rocks are wonderful aren't they? My sons have found a few for me...they make it special.

ReplyDeleteAbe - We found something that looks like the beginning of an arrowhead at the spring house, but that is about it. Seriously. We look and dig around whenever we are down there, so hopefully something else will turn up.

you're so lucky to have such a wonderful spot to enjoy and explore. my sister lives in a high-rise (sharp contrast, hu?) and they have a rock pool full of heart shaped rocks...so she snuck one out to give to me and i keep it in a flower pot.

The area I live in has a lot of limestone and there are many springs in the ledges. It's amazing the amount of water some of them put out.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful haven! I love small streams and waterfalls. In the summer, I take Pickles to a place that we can hike along the river stones for miles, just following the water. I can't wait till it warms up here in NY again.
