Love your dinner bell. I still have the one my grandmother used to call the field hands in for dinner, and the kids if we were on the back of the farm.
We have one too!!! Well my mom and dad do. It was there when we moved in and everytime we have people over from the Netherlands they feel the need to pull on the string to make it work. That bell has given many great pleasures (especialy the kids)and you can really hear it a mile away!
Love it! My sister gave me a dinner triangle and it just hangs in my kitchen... I just yell to the kids instead and forgot all about it until just now! Thanks!
There were nine kids in our family. Dad had wanted to find one of those old bells for each of us before he died, but my older sister and I were the only two to get one. He died with cancer before he was able to complete the task.I'm sure they must have brought back lots of wonderful memories for him,too.
We had an old train bell like that at our old farm as well. My Mom would ring it to call us in for meals or whenever we were out exploring in the back 40 and she wanted us home. Like others have mentioned, you could hear it a looong ways away! Those were the good old days when even as a child I could ride my pony (unsupervised) through the fields for miles. The neighboring farmers were okay with me riding through their land and pastures as long as I respected their crops and closed the gate behind me!
Reading through all the comments on this one got me thinking as to how many people still have old dinner bells or know of them and the fact that using them have just sort of quietly gone out of "use"
I love the dinner bells like that. I want one to put outside my potting shed--I think it looks like a little school house and it would be my school bell. Great photo :)

ReplyDeleteWe had a bell like that at our other farm -- it was dated 1888. We left it behind because it belonged to the farmhouse. :)
