This week the Deerslayer turned fourteen. When did all those years pass? Wasn't he just a tiny baby who loved having his tummy rubbed by his dad, a few days ago? Really it feels like it could have been just last year.
Now he is fast approaching the six foot mark in height and he loves being taller than his mom. He continues to be quite the marksman and loves to hunt and be outdoors. Yes, he did end up killing a squirrel and his receptacle was less than adequate. You would think I would have checked that out before we left our farmette. Thus, we ended up placing said squirrel in a box that we found by his uncle's cabin....that had advertising on it that I shall not mention on this blog.
And yes, I had to drive around Smalltownland with that squirrel in the trunk of my caddy.
John Folse makes the harvesting and cooking of a squirrel sound like such a true southern endeavor. I would like to say I do not join him in his enthusiasm for such tasks.
And no, I did not cook the squirrel, but I did sterilize the trunk of my car.
A born and bred Southerner, there is no place I would rather live. But there's no way I'm skinning and/or gutting anything. Baiting hooks is my limit. LOL
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to your not-so-little-anymore boy!
Just wait 'till your Deerslayer turns 39! Not only will you start feeling very old, but by then you will have gotten used to deer, moose and whatever in your trunk or kitchen I know Elaine did, but my cleaning is relegated to the field or garage.
ReplyDeleteOh, happy birthday to your growing boy/man...
ReplyDeleteI hope the squirrel didn't die in vain... :(
Such a handsome young man! Our ranch kids love to go squirrel and bird hunting and make 'stew' with Grandpa.....I tell them to have fun and not to save me any:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a handsome young man he is, too! I loved that age with my boys.
ReplyDeletetexwisgirl and everyone - The squirrel did not die in vain as my husband did the cleaning/cooking for my son.
ReplyDeleteIan - We already do a lot with venison, but we don't have any moose around here!
ReplyDeleteEven though me son is still three years of age, I do wonder as well, where time did go ...
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday wishes from Athens, Greece as well. May time and life continue to treat him kind.
Yes, they grow up so fast. Don't blink, because that's how fast it seems. Cute little baby and handsome young man. What a good Mom you were to take him hunting and drive around with a dead squirel in your trunk.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Deerslayer...my son is 27 it goes by to fast...now I have a grandson...
ReplyDeleteNot a squirrel! Poor little thing. Happy Birthday to your little hunter!
ReplyDeleteSoon it will be girls not squirrels.
Such a fine looking young man.. Time does pass so fast and they grow up way too soon...Our oldest grandson just turned 15 and oh how I wish he were 6 again...
ReplyDeleteA big happy birthday to your son. Glad he enjoyed his day and glad he was able to bring home the evening meal!!
Blessings,
shug
I refuse to eat squirrel. And possum and coon. oh, and armadillo. Yes, they have all been offered to me. And, I have probably eaten all of them and been lied to about it.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your hunter!
Happy birthday to the deer slayer! I have a deer slayer of my own who happens to be 32 :)
ReplyDeleteNo squirrels this year, but a few rabbits in the freezer. You just never know when you have a hunter in the family. :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your son's birthday Farmchick! He is such a handsome lad!
ReplyDeleteTime goes by much, much too quickly!
Happy Birthday to your growing boy! We have a similar aged boy and in size also. He loves to hunt and this mama doesn't make much of his prized game. But a Southerner would surely make Squirrel Soup or something? :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was about his age I was very happy to wander in the countryside with a gun, but it was so difficult (rightly!) to get cartridges that I almost never shot...
ReplyDeleteThey DO grow up fast, don;t they? Good think we aren't getting aany older, right?
ReplyDeleteCooked squirrel? EW!
Ya, I'll pass on that squirrel entre for dinner. Happy B-Day though to 'slayer'.
ReplyDeleteYou are a good Mom! It sure doesn't take long for those itty bity babies to grow up, does it?
ReplyDeleteI know, I just said the same thing. These are the good ole days!! :) He's a hansome boy, I'm sure he makes you very proud!! xxoo LA
ReplyDeleteI know Deerslayer was so excited. My grandchildren cannot wait until they are allowed to go hunting with Pop.They practice a little with an old air rifle. They are both so anxious to shoot a rabbit or squirrel with a real gun.I'm not big on the idea, but I guess it's in their blood since Pop has always been such an avid hunter.
ReplyDeleteA Happy Belated Birthday to Deerslayer.
Happy Birthday to him, would the tail have made a good key ring ;)
ReplyDeleteHave a good week
See yea George xxx
glad you got to spend a day with your darling son, sad that you had to carry the carcass around in your cool car!!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, Deerslayer. Squirrel hunting as his treat? Yup, Farmchick, you and I definitely do occupy two different worlds. (But I enjoy reading about yours, so long as I don't have to shoot anything.)
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated to you (not so little) man.
ReplyDeleteI would have not cooked... and only sterilized as well;)
Farmchick -- Fourteen is a great age! Handsome son.
ReplyDeleteWonderful new header!

It's wonderful that you have a 'nature boy' in the family. Mine are all grown and gone but they all come home to hunt. Happy Birthday to Him.
ReplyDeleteDon't know how I got so far behind on my reading, but gotta tell ya, love the old farm buildings your hubby found. I get all giddy over this kind of stuff. And your green field made my heart yearn for green grasses of spring. We have another 2 ft. of snow kicking us around.
BlessYourHearts
He sounds like. A Normmal boy to me and doing what I used to like doing, and how did your fix the sauirrels ?
ReplyDeleteTime sure does fly. Mom never took me hunting. She just opened the kitchen door for me and I could hunt til my hearts content in any direction :).
ReplyDeleteI think squirrel meat is pretty good. Make a little bit of squirrel gravy to go with it and it makes it even better. And, yes, our kids grow up way too fast.
ReplyDeleteA well written post keeping us in suspense in an amusing way until the very end. Presumably the squirrel was a 'grey' which I don't have an opinion on as there is a constant battle where I live trying to protect the habitat of the 'red' as the 'grey's' gradually march north consuming the red's food. Happy Birthday to the squirrel slayer !!
ReplyDeleteYou were brave to allow that dead squirrel in the trunk of your caddy- ah! the things we do for our kiddos!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday to your son! They grow up way too fast but then, someday, they'll give your sweet grandchildren :)
ReplyDeleteoh my... you mean he didnt have a jacket with a game pocket in back?
ReplyDeleteYou can fit many squirrels that way...
Happy belated, Deerslayer! you'll teach that mom yet!
