Reality Corn


This year I didn't even plant corn.  I know....I know...it really is a staple of summertime, but it just didn't make it into, what I will now refer to as my, "Jungle Garden".  

Lucky for me there was a lovely, older gentleman selling bags of sweet corn, on the side of the road.  Here in Smalltownland, Amish folks and gentleman farmers like to sell their produce here and there.  And so, I slammed on the breaks and bought about fifty ears of corn.  




 The weather was quite poor when I got home, so I shucked the corn in the kitchen.  


I won't do that again.  




There was corn silk everywhere.  





Here is the reality of cleaning, cooking, and cutting fresh corn off of the cob.  



It was a big mess.  





But, it was totally worth it.

  2. That corn looks so good, I haven't been out anywhere to look for some. I could raise some decent corn if I wasn't in the middle of field corn which seems to mess up my sweet corn. Fifty ears should do you for awhile though shucking in the kitchen isn't good but you do what you have to.

  3. Oh I do love a great cob of corn every so now and then. These photos of your remind me of my MOM. She loved to blanch corn and freeze it. YUMMMMMY

  4. great shots, just I was reading your post my husband appeared over my shoulder, leaned in closer, suggested I run up and down your photos as he made sounds of appreciation and then left saying tomorrow he's off to get corn, he's going to follow suit..Funny all the way across the Atlantic, in a little bit of a town in the south of france you've inspired a frenchman to freeze corn ;-), isn't blogging fun.

  5. oh, we used to do this with my mom as kids. you're right - sweet corn, juice, silks, husks EVERYWHERE for a while. but when you pull a bag of it from the freezer in the dead of winter... yum!

  6. We had boiled corn last night and my sink and kitchen floor suffered, but it is worth it, like you said. You will be glad you went through that this winter. Have a great Tuesdayl.

  8. In my younger days, I did that. Fresh frozen corn IS delicious. Well worth the mess.

  14. Indeed. We go through the same process, though having given up vegetable gardening our farmer neighbors give us all the sweet corn we can handle for free. Besides their vast corn for pigs and ethanol they also have some Seneca acres...

  18. It's a messy job, but somebody's gotta do it, right? I didn't plant any this yr. either and am already wishing otherwise. Guess who else will be buying it by the bags full...

  20. Oh, so true!! We'd do the shucking outside but the cutting off was always inside and there's be corn spattered everywhere. Sticky, sticky from all that sugar, but oh so good to eat later on.

  21. My garden is really not doing well this year. Well, the veggies in the garden aren't good, but the weeds are healthy as can be! I hope to find some road side vendors, also!

  22. HI well that was a bit of a mess in your kitchen however I am sure it will be well worth while when you eat the corn. Do you never keep the corn on the cob and freeze it that way. I love eating it that way with melted butter, salt and pepper. Margaret

  24. What a good thing for you to do! We've made corn on the cob a few times lately and the last ones were so mealy and awful, we gave most of them to our chickens! I hope we can grow some for next year. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

    Do you also blanch the corn on cob itself?

    Nothing like corn on the cob with rolling it into the butter.

  33. Looks very bountiful! Corn silk is very beautiful, but also a pest, as you describe. We can't grow corn successfully in our part of Scotland - too chilly.

  36. tell us how to prep cprn for freezing. I made a bunch last year baking it with cream, butter, seasoning and then frrezing it... more like creamed corn, but delicious!
