It's a Done Deal

It's us!

After a whirlwind week of activities, the man-child of the house graduated this past Friday.

Creative and intelligent, he has been a true challenge to raise.  He was our practice baby and put our newly founded parenting skills to the test.  So many of our friends have been sad to see their children graduate high school, but I have felt true celebration as we finally met this milestone.

What does the future hold for him?  At this time, he remains undecided.

Yet, an infinite road of possibilities awaits his footsteps.

"You're time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking.  Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice.  And, most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition."

Friday Randoms

A neighboring farm pond, shot taken on the way to work.

Here are some crazy/spooky tales about Kentucky.  Enjoy!

I admit to being a fan of a great hamburger.  How about you?  Here are some good burger finds across America.

Looking to spruce up the home?   Here are some inexpensive ideas.

School is out for summer!  Woot, woot!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for life, growth, and change.  This week we celebrate the graduation of both young people in my household.  One moving up to high school and one moving out into life.

And it all happened in the blink of an eye.

The Long Road

Growing and Growing

Things are really taking off here at the farmette.  Though our busy schedules have us gardening a bit later than usual, everything is growing right along.

Petunias on the back porch.

Pumpkins, my favorite thing.

We have prolific pear trees.

The Heirloom Flame tomatoes are coming right along.

Little onions right in a row.

Friday Randoms

Drove by this interesting mailbox while out in the middle of nowhere.  A child's saddle, perhaps?

Have you ever wanted to be a knight?  These knights wore GoPro cameras while jousting.  It's almost like being one....without the injuries.

Asheville is one of my favorite cities.  Just in case you will be visiting soon, here are some excellent eateries in the area.

Did you catch David Letterman's last show?  His final top ten list can be found here.

Something a little different for this week's musical sample.

Thankful Thursday

Thankful today for my daughter's softball team.  After suffering an ankle sprain at first base, they rallied around her with the kind of support every fourteen year old would be fortunate to have.  After gathering together to carry her out to the truck, they continued with calls, texts, and outpourings of encouragement.

After a ER visit, we are resting at home for the day.  We are so blessed to live in this community.

Its Been A While

Simply because its been a while, today is Tuesday, and my almanac calendar say the moon will rise at 5:42pm,  we have a decrepit house in which to wonder when it will really fall down.

You can't travel around these small, country roads without seeing a farmhouse in a state of disrepair.  This makes me think it could be a saddlebag log structure.  I confess I didn't get up close and personal to check for logs under the siding.

I photographed this horseshoe at the entrance of an old cellar.  Embedded in the walkway, it begs the question.....just why is it there?

Was it a memento from a favorite horse?  Did the person who placed it here think it would bring the family luck?

Dictionaries define luck as:  success or failure brought by chance rather than by one's actions.

Some people don't believe in luck, or chance.

What about you, dear you believe in luck?

Friday Randoms

This week has been a whirlwind of activity.  This picture illustrates three wonderful young ladies dressed as famous leaders in history.  A dinner celebration culminated their leadership program for the school year.  From the left:  Mother Teresa, Dorothy Hodgkin, and Cleopatra.  I'll claim Cleo as my own.  I would take the other two as well :)

Swimming with jellyfish?  Apparently it is possible in Jellyfish Lake, in the western pacific.

Rebel Wilson truly makes me laugh.  Maybe that is why the girl and I will be watching Pitch Perfect 2 this weekend.  You can catch a clip of her right here.

Paula Deen's waterfront home in Savannah is for sale.  I have to admit that I don't care much for the kitchen design, but the walk in pantry makes up for it.

I heard it was Stevie Wonder's birthday this week.  Let's get downnnnnn......

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday because....hey, I made it to Thursday!  Our busy weeks are drawing to a close for this spring season.  I, for one, am glad.  It's all been good, but a little downtime is in order.

Sleep in a Wigwam

Not very far away from the farmette resides a little piece of history in the shape of tipis.

Built in 1937, the Wigwam Village Hotel is still in use today.  For about $70 dollars a night you can rest in the luxury of the original hickory and cane furnishings, with a private bath.

Originally seven Wigwam Villages were built across the country.  Frank A. Redford patented the design in 1936.  Today, only three remain.  One here in Kentucky, one in Holbrook Arizona, and one in Rialto, California.

Secret Agent Farmer Man told me he stayed here as a kid.

I am jealous.

I might have to take corrective action.

Happy Mother's Day

To My Mother

You too, my mother, read my rhymes
For love of unforgotten times,
And you may chance to hear once more
The little feet along the floor.

Robert Louis Stevenson

Happy Mother's Day to my own wonderful mother, on this auspicious Sunday, and to all the moms who sacrifice so much.

Friday Randoms

I need at least one of these concrete chicken beauties.  When I took this photograph I didn't even notice Bigfoot lurking on the left.

Bridges don't bother me, but I might have to take a pass on crossing this one.

There are so many positive messages in this story, I don't even know where to start.  Never give up!  Follow your dreams!  Life is for living up to the last minute!

Heard this on the radio twice this week.  A total sign if there ever was one.

Thankful Thursday

Thankful today for bucolic scenes such as this.  I think it almost looks a bit too perfect to be true, so let me dispel that idea.  I took this shot shot hanging out the driver's side of a pick-up truck while making my way home, on a small country road.  While it was later in the afternoon, the heat had rousted up some clouds, that did nothing to relieve anyone's discomfort.

It is scenes like this that keep me going through a busy life.

Apple Blossoms

After I posted a picture for Random Five Friday, a few people inquired about our red apple blossoms here at the farmette.

As you can see they turn from red, to pink, to a white bloom.

We have lived here for the past fourteen years and this tree has bloomed each year, without fail.

It produces some small, tart apples and provides us with much beauty.

Thoughts From the Week

Today I present to you a selection of random barn shots that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject matter of this post.  Do enjoy.....

I now have a cap and gown hanging in the laundry room.  Wrinkle free, shiny, and all ready for ceremonies happening in a few weeks.  It seems strange that the young man of the house is already 18 years old.

I shall be making this fine dessert tonight for our Sunday family supper.  If you haven't made it, you need to.  A family/potluck favorite.

In between softball games yesterday, I checked out my latest edition of Southern Living magazine.  (Thanks Mom for the subscription.)  Rick Bragg's column at the back of the book is always a favorite of mine.  Here is a great example of his work.  And, his words ring true.

Signing off for now, as chores await as does more coffee.  With the men fishing and the softball girl resting, I am enjoying some quiet in this old farmhouse.

Go forth and have an exceptional Sunday.

Friday Randoms

The apple trees are just about, "bloomed out", at this farm.

Tomorrow is the Kentucky Derby!  Have you picked your horse yet?  Here are the favorites listed by some experts.  I'm going with, "Carpe Diem", for the Derby and, "I'm a Chatterbox", for the Oaks.

Here are some fast facts about the derby.

A classic Kentucky music selection for this fine Friday.  Or, if you need something with some pep, here is something extra.

Can I confess that the high school softball schedule is kicking my behind and I am not even the one playing?  Looking forward to catching up with many of you later this weekend.

Linking up with Tanya today.  Go forth and have a great Friday!
