Friday Randoms

An artistic rendering of a dried pod of something or other......

I have shared a list of things about Kentucky before, but here are a few others that you might not have known.  I didn't know a few of them.

Found eggs in the coop!  A Christmas Miracle right here at the end of January.  Put them on the back porch while I did some more chores.  Came back to find 3 missing and my Border Collie smacking her doggie lips......

This teacher is showing everyone how cool we really are.

And, we know we need some music for the weekend.

Thankful Thursday

Thankful today for a snow day this week.  Maybe we should call it an icy road kind of day, but a day off, none the less.

Lunch with the daughter, chili cooking on the stove, puttering around the house, etc.....

It's these kind of quiet days that fuel me for the rest of the year.

Peanut Butter and Chocolate Solve Everything

Once upon a time, not so long ago....

our illustrious First Lady decided to reform the nation's school lunch menu.

Mostly for the good, this decision left an indelible mark at my school.

You see, the Reece Cup Bars that our lunch ladies made were the stuff of legend.  Known to cure all ills and many types of unhappiness, they became virtually obsolete.

So I had to take matters into my own hands and come up with a recipe I could live with.

More importantly, one my son would love.

These were made at his request and they are going fast, causing great waves of happiness around the house.

Reeces Peanut Butter Bars

1 cup melted butter
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
2 cups powdered sugar
*Mix these ingredients and press into an 8x12 inch pan.

Pour 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips into a microwave proof bowl and top it off with 1 cup and 4 tablespoons peanut butter.  Melt until smooth, stirring at each interval.

Pour peanut butter/chocolate mixture on top of the graham cracker mix in the pan.  Chill until firm.

*Crucial Tip*
Scrape off any remaining chocolate/peanut butter mixture that is left in the bowl and eat every drop.

The White Stuff

(Insert your best Gomer Pyle voice)

Surprise, surprise, surprise!

We awoke to a bit more than a dusting of snow yesterday morning.

I think the forecast was for a dusting with some sleet.

No sleet, just incredibly large, fluffy flakes.  Witnessed by me at about one o'clock in the morning when the dogs needed an outside break.

When the sun came up, it made everything sparkle.

Then, it melted by noon.

Friday Randoms

Yet another old farmhouse fading fast.  This one is located next to a Civil War Battlefield.  Is it inhabited?  I kind of thought so......

Since it is officially soup/chili/stew season at the Farmette, I really feel the need for this kitchen utensil.

52 impressive photographs to scroll through are right here.

She has a great voice.

This is my husband's pick for this Friday's music selection.

Thankful Thursday

The sunset, at the Farmette, yesterday afternoon.

Thankful this Thursday for sunshine.  The sun has been out and temps have been in the fifties.  An afternoon walk has been the norm, but snow is looming on the forecast for Friday and cold days are ahead once more.

Sounds like more time reading by the wood stove.  I think I can live with that.

Garden Planning Time

It's that time of year again, You know, the time to plan your garden and order some seeds. Maybe the warm temps this week have me motivated, but seed catalogs started arriving here at the Farmette in December.  After pouring over the catalogs I have made a conservative list.

Here are the contestants, in no particular order....

Boston Pickling Cucumber
Tennessee Spinning Gourd
Rocky Top Lettuce Mix
Plum Granny Melon
Jarrahdale Pumpkin
Rouge Vif D'etampes Pumpkin
Vulcan Swiss Chard
Cherokee Purple Tomato
Hillbilly Tomato
Spider Plant Heirloom Flower Mix
Atomic Red Carrot
Petit Gris De Rennes Melon
Triamble Pumpkin
Turk's Cap Pumpkin
Moon and Stars Watermelon

This list comes from the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Catalog.  A great company that I have had a lot of success with.  A few seed packets will come from Annie's Heirloom Seeds.

Anyone out there planning their gardens yet?

Do you have a favorite seed company?

Do tell.....inquiring minds want to know.

Animal Magnetism

I would like to think this pair came down to the Farmette again yesterday just to visit with me.  However, after spying me in my muck boots they took off like a shot.

They did leave some gifts in the yard and pasture.  I shall be driving the wheelbarrow around today collecting those calling cards for my flower beds.

Here is Mr. Donkey following his horse friend back up the road in the early morning sunshine.  He looks sad to leave.....

Somehow I think they will both be back.

Friday Randoms

Blue skies, limestone, and leafless trees.....a trifecta of beauty on this Kentucky farm.

Sam Smith singing, "I'm Not the Only One", is my daughter's favorite song on the radio lately.  I introduced her to this version and she actually likes it.

We could all use a little humor in our lives.  Here is some Jimmy Fallon to get your weekend started.

I remember the Marlboro advertisements from my childhood.  Darrell Winfield, the iconic cowboy in those photographs, passed away this week.

Chefs divulge their favorite burger spots and I confess that it makes me want to visit a Shake Shack.  Never been to one.....

Thankful Thursday

Thankful today for an old farm with a bit of history.   This piece of fence has been on our farm for at least thirty-five years, maybe longer.....hard to say.

I would guess it has a lot of stories to tell and has been witness to many seasons passing through the years.

Right behind it rests this creek, formed from the natural springs on our farmette.  The farm dogs were splashing through this creek yesterday, even though the temperature at the time was only thirty-three degrees.

Star Light, Star Bright

Secret Agent Farmer Man looks at this photograph and only sees the thorns, the brambles, the rough edges.  But, if one focuses on the center, a dainty star exists.

Even in the harshest seasons, the flowers leave us beauty.

The Ladies in White

This Sunday morning post is brought to you by the Ladies in White.

This isn't their favorite time of year, but they do have just a tad bit of green grass in which to forage.

They receive a lot of feed and veggie scraps, so they are getting fluffier by the day.

One lady is not so fluffy and is actually missing quite a few feathers.  We feel the, "pecking order", is to blame for this.

*sigh*

Friday Randoms

Well, it's Friday and the time for whatever randoms things come across my mind.  Here is a picture of the, "back way home".  I live pretty far out in the country, so I think maybe this also looks like the regular way home.

A collection of cartoonists paying tribute to the fallen satirists is here.  A sad state of affairs for all of us.....

If you are looking for a good photo sharing opportunity, then look no further than here.  Yes, you can find me there.

That passing of Stuart Scott only adds to the sadness of the week.  You can find the best of him right here.

It has been a heavy week, my friends.  I will leave you with a little music for your weekend.

Thankful Thursday

Let us pause here at mile marker #1 to be thankful today.  Thankful that I work at a school that passes out free gloves, to every student, on a cold winter day. Thankful that a homemade pot of chili tastes better on the second day.  And, finally, thankful that my daughter shares all of the crazy stuff that happens during her school day.

North and South

Sunday morning gave entirely two different views, with credit due to the impending cold weather.

Here we have a southern view from the front porch.  The barn is shown, with a sloping hillside going down to the natural springs and waterfalls.  There is a herd of cows out there, but hardly visible in this photograph.

Here is the weather rolling in from the north.  The view is still from the front porch, about two minutes after I took the photograph above.  A strange contrast with warm hues making the grass look even more green than it is and cool hues with dark clouds and harsh light.

Our old farmhouse sits in a depression, which I call the, "bowl", and this affords us views that I feel like we normally wouldn't have.  Everything just, "rolls", right over us.

Single digit temperatures will be here by midweek.  The norm for some of you out there, but harsh for us in the Ohio Valley.

Overtaken

Overtaken is the word of the day.

When I stopped to photograph this barn, I wanted to capture its current state of being overtaken by the surrounding tree growth.

After uploading the photo, I was a bit overtaken by the beauty of the sky.

Funny what you can almost miss by focusing on just a single item.

Today I offer up a squiggly piece of wood for your viewing excitement.

Ten photos from the Department of the Interior that are worth your time.

If you have some New Years Resolutions, then these phrases just might help you a bit.

A little disco track, as heard from the latest installment of the Night at the Museum series.

No plans for the day and I find that to be pretty awesome.  Enjoy your weekend, my friends!
