The Birds are Back

On Friday several of you mentioned that you didn't even realize it was time for the Kentucky Derby.  If you are living in the state, you seriously can't miss it.  Even our primary school holds a stick horse race for the children.  It's a tradition.

Nyquist, (Nyquil), did end up winning, so that goes to show what I know about picking a horse.

In other hot news, it seems the finches are back.

Some even like to cop a squat in an empty flower pot.

They are beautiful to watch, but hard to photograph through the kitchen window.

Then, the Tufted Titmouse showed up to show everyone who was in charge.

  1. Love the birds, they are back here too. Today, I saw two smaller birds chase away a raven who sat down in a Juniper next to their nest. It's amazing how brave these little birds are when it comes to defending their young. Nyquist is a Swedish last name, means New Twig, and I learned he was named after a Swedish Hockey player named Gustav Nyquist. Go figure.....

  2. If I were a bird, I would love to go to that precious bird house. They are so pretty and yellow. Mr. and Mrs. Hector and their family have returned (our nicknames for all the hummers). We are so excited. Hope to get a photo soon.

  4. Those are some very colorful goldfinch, Michelle, and I could never get a good shot of a tufted titmouse. And, yes I used to shot from the kitchen window as well!

  5. These are very hard pictures to catch.

I knew the Kentucky Derby was Sunday and I usually watch it, but not this year. I had something else to do.

  18. Tufted Titmouse is not common here, but I am happy to report that I have discovered a place where they are breeding(I say "discovered" in the broadest sense - doubtless others knew of it). It's a wonderful little bird.
