Snowy Barn

A leftover picture of a snowy barn for today.  This week we are expecting spring-like temps and  severe thunderstorms.  Only in Kentucky can you have a snowstorm one week and a thunderstorm the next.

The weather is a constant source of entertainment.

My awesome Border Collie buddy stays with me no matter where I go.  Woods, creeks, and muddy pastures make no difference to her.

If you use a non-Google account to follow my blog, (or others), you are now out of luck.  Blogger now requires followers using Friend Connect to have a Google account.  Many people, including me, are not appreciating these antics.  If you are losing followers, this is why.

The current political arena leaves a lot to be desired, but here is something that just might put a smile on your face, or even make you chuckle.

Looks like Darth Vader is popping up all around the world.

Of course there is some music for the weekend.  Enjoy!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful today for the Snow-mageddon, or Snowzilla, or Snowcation...whatever you might call it.  That last few days slowed things down quite a bit.  It gave us time for books, conversation, lazy afternoons, cooking, baking, and time together.

It was grand.

Now we are in the thaw, with school back to a regular schedule and all activities on track.  Right back on the treadmill of life.

We have to be thankful for the moments we are given, even if they come with cold temperatures.

Home Again

To market, to market to buy a fat pig,

Home again, home again, jiggety-jig.....

That is where we are planted again today, home.  Even though the main roads have been plowed, many roads, including those in the direct vicinity of our schools, remain untouched.

The men went to work yesterday and the girl and I did some shopping.  Not having left the farmette in five days, it was time I ventured out into the world.  We picked up some food and some clothes, and some clothes, and some clothes.....

Teenage girls seem to need a lot, especially when they continue to grow.  I am now the shortest person in the household.

What is on the agenda for today?

Hmmmm.....

Some chores and a bit of time outside.  With it being thirty-nine degrees out right now, it seems positively tropical.

Tropical, I tell ya......

Oh, What a Beautiful Morning

We ended up with about 13 inches of snow and a thin layer of ice underneath all of it.  Many places drifted with higher amounts.

Last night we had temps in the single digits and a freezing fog.

It coated everything in glorious, sparkling ice crystals.

As the sun rose, the sky became a clear, beautiful blue.  The clear road to our house is the result of our neighbor's generous spirit.  He used his enormous tractor to plow the entire length of our small, country road and our driveway.  Our county road crews have been working overtime to keep main roads clear.  Small roads like this are not top priority.

School was in session one day last week and it doesn't look too promising for tomorrow.  Some of our surrounding counties have already closed school for Monday.

At this point I actually haven't left the farmette since last Tuesday.

It's all good.

Friday Randoms

My barnyard friend here is letting me know that she is tired of this snow business.  Ten inches predicted for today with a thin layer of ice underneath.  And so many people didn't think we were going to get much snow this winter.....

"Tis the season for a good hot chocolate recipe.  Here are a few that you might like to try.

It is almost time for the Superbowl!  I will admit that I really don't care to watch it, but I do enjoy the commercials.  Here is a list of the fifty best of all time.  And, you can watch them, too.

Free throw distractions are just part of a good basketball game and this one gets an A+ and a good laugh from me.

Sending you off into the weekend with some Stevie Wonder and James Corden.  If this doesn't make you smile, then nothing will!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful today for the stillness of our farm.  With our new blanket of snow, it is even quieter than usual.  I think we received about three inches yesterday and a possibility of eight more arriving tonight.

Gotta love Old Man Winter!

Man's Best Friend

I ran across this old photo while going through my archives, actually looking for something else. Charlie looks so chill here, taking in the farm scene.  Lately he likes to chill in a lap, not an easy feat as big as he is.

Black and White Sunday

Life here at the farmette, featured in black and white today.

A perfect, swirly hay roll.

The equipment of our son's craftsman ways.
I feel like this picture could have been taken fifty years ago.

An old well, just down the hill from our farmhouse.

A Sycamore tree full of texture.

The remnants of the old spring house for our farm.  Cold spring water is flowing from the right, inside corner.  We have found many shards of ancient pottery, dishes, and pitchers here, through the years.

Even in the midst of winter, I am dreaming of a summer vacation with my family.  Here is a list of things to check out while driving across our great country.

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this week for a warm house.  I know that might seem trivial, but it has been seriously cold.  As in, the dogs do not want to be outside for any sort of reason, kind of cold.  Yes, we do have modern heating, but nothing warms the bones like an old fashioned wood stove.

Nothing like watching some sweet pups stretch out and warm their tummies by the fire.  It's the little things, you know....

That Four Letter Word

View from my front porch, about the same time last year.

We might, just might, receive some snow tonight.  It has some people bent all out of shape as our local school superintendent has already placed an, "all call", to all students stating there will be school tomorrow.

Funny how a little bit of predicted snow can have such an effect on people.  In an area like mine, with crazy country backroads, it can be quite the problem.

Me?  Well, I am hoping we receive the predicted amount.

It's about time, I think......

Simple

Simple ~ adj.  easy to do or understand;  not complicated;  ordinary

A shadow of a bird in a tree.....no photoshop, no filter, just a simple image for today.

Looking for a simple day, as well.

Baking a cake, whipping up a new recipe, and staying indoors on this bitterly cold day.

Yes, we still have some grass hanging around central Kentucky, along with a little tobacco drying in the barn eaves.  With some below freezing temps and a bit of snow coming our way this weekend, it just might disappear.

This dog gets a ball pit for his birthday and it is just about as cute as you might think.

Adult coloring books are all the rage and several of my friends report their relaxing effect.  More of their great qualities can be found here.

The magical beauty of a snowflake can be witnessed right here.

Leaving you with a little ELO for the weekend ahead......

Thankful Thursday

I don't know what to be more thankful for this Thursday, our stunning sunsets recently or this lone tree.  She has provided me with many a photo-op through the years, but the sunsets are running a close second.  Both provided some great views while I was out walking in some chilly cold weather.

Risky

I ran across this sign out for a walk at a nature preserve, while visiting my parent's over the holidays.

Made me think about how everything is at our own risk.  We attempt control with our daily decisions, but life throws so many curve balls our way.

Leaving you with some Lucinda Williams.  Maybe we could all use some protection.

A Study in Contrast

Some folks in my neck of the woods have said, "Well, we are having one warm winter."  But, let's be fair and acknowledge that winter only officially started less than two weeks ago.

We have had some spotty frost and some of that appeared yesterday morning.

It stayed around in some of the cooler, shadier patches of the farmette.

At this time of year you rather expect it everyday.

However, I still have a Dianthus trying to bloom.

Go figure.....

While visiting my parents over the holidays, I was cruising the neighborhood looking for photo-worthy opportunities.  This means the husband was driving me around while I shouted, "stop!", at erratic intervals.  This pelican held his pose for quite a while.  Maybe hoping a fish would drop from the sky.

Are you looking for a new challenge for 2016?  I might have just the ticket!  The Army is looking for some willing participants for a 3-week all MRE diet.  If you are that person....click here.

Meadowlark Lemon passed earlier this week.  I remember watching him, and the Harlem Globetrotters, as a child.  What a fantastic memory.

Garden & Gun's best photos of 2015 can be found here.   Worth your time....

I will be ringing in 2016 with a glass of wine and season 6 of Justified.  If, however, your evening was a bit more.....excitable, might I suggest one of these remedies.
