The Holdout

Many things on the farmette are moving past their prime.  If it isn't the impending change of season, then it's the relentless heat that is wearing them down.  This tiny sunflower blossom is brilliant among the tired stalks.

Beauty survives, even among the desolate.

Butterflies Abound

Our summer season is coming to a close.....

Our apple and pear trees are dropping their fruits and our mornings are becoming cool and foggy.

Some fruit is picked, some is harvested for deer food plots, and some, sadly, falls to the ground.

The latter seems to be the best circumstance for the butterflies.

They do enjoy the sweet fruit on the ground, as well as any wildflower along our road.

Friday Randoms

A sweet butterfly I spied on the farmette.

I can't believe this happened to The Colonel.  I mean, it was supposed to be a secret.  Harlan would not be happy.

When the time comes, I can only hope to reside in a facility as wonderful as this.

This little baby is sleeping through her moment of fame.

Leaving you with a little Rye Whiskey for the weekend.

Thankful Thursday

A scene from a walk this week.

Thankful today for just today.
A chance to be the person I need to be to so many people.
The parent, wife, teacher, daughter, etc......

Who will need you today?

Competition

The one on the left is coming in for a landing and has a bit of competition from the pesky guy on the right.

I have a spot, outside my kitchen window, that is shaded by an upper story deck.  Feeders and flowers flourish here, as do the hummingbirds.  Not only do they stop by for a snack, they land and relax all through the day.

Saving Seeds

I mentioned earlier this summer that I had some Four O'Clocks growing here at the farmette.  A favorite of mine as I remember them from childhood.  My Grandmother Bird always grew them at her house in Kentucky.  She would send my mom envelopes of the seeds when we lived in North Dakota.

Needless to say, no one else in the neighborhood, or maybe the entire Air Force Base, had these growing in their flower beds.  Standing around 24 inches tall at maturity, they get their name because they open late in the afternoon.  It's really the drop in temperature that does the trick.  On cool summer days, they stay open all day long.

When the seeds turn black, they will fall off and self-sow, giving you plenty of plants for the next growing season.  They do form tuberous roots which help them come back year, after year.

This season I am collecting plenty of seeds to spread their joy around the farmette.

Friday Randoms

A lovely farmette flower to take my mind off of a laundry room mess.  Did you know that getting an old washer and dryer out of a house is stressful even when all you do is hold the door open for its exit?  On the flip side, a new set will reside here this afternoon.

If you are a fan of, American Pickers, then you will enjoy this peek into Mike Wolfe's home.

I can say that I wouldn't have been as calm as this cyclist, but his furry visitors sure were cute.

Here are some great shots from the Olympic games.

Sending you off into the weekend with some Three Dog Night.
Enjoy!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for a busy week.  Being busy means I am up and able bodied, ready to take on all that is before me.  For that I am very thankful.

Hummingbird Moth

This Hummingbird Moth buzzed in this past weekend.

This is the first time I have noticed him....or is it her?

Lately I have been too absorbed in keeping the bird feeders full to notice much else, not to mention my time outside in the heat has been limited.

This sweet thing was soon on its way to bigger and better flowers.

Hiding Behind Sunflowers

Today I give you a picture of our barn peeking out from behind a patch of sunflowers.  Flowers that are slowly moving past their prime.

Heirloom flowers are flourishing despite the heat and lack of rain.

Have you ever had to buy a gift for the person who had everything?  Well, here is a gift they don't have....for sure.

Winter is coming....or at least that is what I hear.  The Old Farmer's Almanac says the upcoming winter is going to be, "extra awful."  How awesome is that?!

If you think Michael Phelps is a cutie, you should check out his son.

A great cover of one of my favorite country songs to send you into the weekend.

Have a great one!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for kind words.  Getting back into the swing of school has meant some busy times, but kind words from friends, co-workers, parents, and students make all the difference.

It's just as important to speak kind words as to receive them.  I hope you will send some kind words out into the universe today.

Overgrown

An heirloom gourd vine is threatening to take over the front porch.

At this point I am not too concerned.  I know the common dream is for one to sit and relax on their front porch, but I don't seem to have much luck with that endeavor.  On one attempt a snake was found underneath a chair cushion and an angry wasp stung me on the backside while I was attempting relaxation, on another attempt.

Some things aren't meant to be, I suppose.

Snow in August

Made you look with that blog title, right?

If, like me, you are sweltering then I hope this photo cools you off a bit.  Our weatherman predicted such a nice day for us, yesterday.  However, it remained semi-sweltering with two downpours.

Go figure......

I cannot imagine being a weatherman/person.  You work hard to make predictions and then it just all goes to pot....a lot of the time.

Friday Randoms

It's that time of year, again.  A few farmers still raise tobacco in my area of Kentucky.  Much of the crop is starting to mature.

A man in a kayak + a shark = trouble.  You can see it all right here.

I am seriously in love with this restored schoolhouse.  Must be the teacher in me.

I, for one, am ready for fall.  Here are a few decorating ideas.

This is a great cover of Paradise by John Prine.
Enjoy

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for a great first day of school.  Can I say that receiving flower arrangements from students is a great way to start a morning?!

Though, I did have a student who asked me what color my hair was, "underneath".  I think she was waiting for me to lift my hair.....I didn't.

Sharing a fence shot from Kentucky's great city of Lexington, during a horse race....what else?

Small Town Problems

The view of my small town square through the upstairs window of an antique store.

Often times I paint the picture of small town perfection.  Though life here is good, it isn't without its problems.

Take last night, for example.

The girl of the house had her annual softball banquet.  Parents and players gather for a wonderful meal, awards are give out, and a good time is had by all.  I was seated by a lovely parent who has been somewhat unlucky in love.  She let us all know that two of her ex-husbands were seated together at the end of the table and her current husband was next to her.

She said if she lived in New York City she wouldn't be having such problems.

And, there you have it.
