The Wart Charmer

Recently my great aunt passed away.  In her early nineties, she lived a full and productive life.  The sister of my grandfather, I remember visits with her as a child and even more so as an adult.  She was outspoken and quite political.  She had a quick wit and loved Little Debbie cakes.

She was also a wart charmer.

This wasn't something that I knew about her, until a few years ago.  My father let it slip during conversation and then seemed surprised that I didn't know.  How would I know?  That isn't something that just comes up in regular conversation.  He told me that she had removed warts for him, as a boy.  She held the affected area and asked him if he believed.  After saying he did, there was no more to it.  No prayers, incantations, or bible verses.  His wart went away, shortly thereafter.

She died without any children and I have to admit that I wonder if she passed her skill forward to another family member. Warts can also be bought and conjured, along with other types of healing.    This type of folklore/magic/cure interests me more as I continue to delve into Appalachian culture.  Here is an article of interest with information on cures and conjuring from The Irish Times.  Just the place where so many of Appalachian traditions originated.

Do you have any wart charmers, conjurers, or healers in your family?

Sunflowers in my Future

Spring is truly here as our local drive-in theater is now in operation, for the season.  However, the wood stove is cranking and beef stew is on the menu for today, because it is cold!

Warm again tomorrow, such is spring in Kentucky.

Sharing an oldie from the archives this morning.  Hoping for sunflowers this summer.  Such a joyous flower.

Friday Randoms

It's that time of year again.  Iris flowers are everywhere.

I just don't know about the new Unicorn Frappuccino from Starbucks.  I enjoy their coffee every now and again, but seriously coffee should not come in rainbow colors.

Parenthood, right here, in real words.  Enjoy

Who knew that a town in my great state will be the best place to view the solar eclipse this year?

Sending you off into the weekend with some Jefferson Starship.

Thankful Thursday

Can I just say that today I am thankful it is Thursday?  At the end of the school year things get so busy that it is often overwhelming, to say the least.  With seventeen school days left we have two field trips, one science day, one theater day, field day, and some instruction that I have to squeeze in there, somewhere.

Wish me luck!

What are you thankful for today?  Let me know!

Prom Success

Our weekend did not have an auspicious beginning.  The softball playing-girl of the house had some serious trouble with her allergy/asthma problems after playing ball Thursday night.  This necessitated a visit to our friendly family physician on Friday.  An unexpected day off, but truly needed.  After a steroid shot and a 9 day steroid prescription she was ready to go and breathing freely.

After a day of rest/medication she was ready to go for Prom 2017, on Saturday.  She and I went to the softball field for a few photos.  After she asked me what she was supposed to do with the chair, I didn't think things were going to go very well, but we persisted.

We, (I), persisted.....

and persisted.....

I think they turned out pretty well.

She went with a group of friends and had a great time.

A local group hosts a prom after party at the bowling alley, complete with plenty of food, bowling, and other games.

You have to pass a breathalyzer test before you enter the festivities.

Seriously......

Friday Randoms

You know you live in a small town when the local florist calls to double check your order of prom flowers, because he can't read his, "memaw's" handwriting on the order form.
 I love it.

Yes, prom is happening this weekend and the girl of the house is attending with a group of friends.  Here are a few prom fails from Jimmy Fallon.

If all football coaches could dance like this, it might be more fun to watch.

I guess healthy desserts are needed, but I am not putting kale in my chocolate chip cookies.

I heard some Johnny Cash at the ballpark this week, though it wasn't this gem.

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for people who listen.  You know, those friends and coworkers who lend an ear when things aren't going your way or they are there to share a laugh.  I have people like this who are there for me everyday.  I hope you do too.

What are you thankful for today?  Let me know and link up!

Just One More

Just one more photo of the water and sky before I mentally leave it all behind.....

Currently looking at a rain forecast tonight, which will afford me some time to catch up with everyone.  Our girl's softball team is undefeated in regular season play and their schedule is crazy.

Wishing all of you a great day!

The Green, Green Grass of Home

It's always good to get away for a few days.  See new things, do new things, and get the mind out of the work routine.  However, there is no place like home.  I was astounded at just how green everything was on my return.  This farm is just down the road from my own.  There is no photoshop or filter in place with this photograph, only green grass and a setting sun.

Nothing like the real thing.

Friday Randoms

Sharing a photo I posted on Instagram of a park next to my parent's home.
A bench with a great view.

Thinking of a road trip in the future?  Here is a vintage camper you might like.

Breakfast for dinner is a favorite around my house.  If you love it too, then here are a few recipes you might enjoy.  I'll take the drunken bread pudding, please.....

I haven't used the services of an Uber driver, but if you have, maybe one of these items belongs to you.

My Dad shared The Super Cats with me this week and now I am sharing them with you.
Enjoy!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for time spent with my parents.  Some good talks, a little warm, Florida sunshine, and good food, make for a great week.

Off We Go

Our school is finally on spring break this week and I will be absent for a few days while I spend some time with my parents.  The girl and I are off on an adventure, while the guys are holding down the farmette.

See you on Thursday.
