Memorial Day

Take a moment and recognize a veteran this weekend.  Their service is vital to our country.  Pictured above is my Dad, who made a career in the Air Force.  He sacrificed much time away from his family and valued his service to our country.

"The willingness of American's veterans to sacrifice for our country, has earned them our lasting gratitude."

Just because I like a bit of rust.....

I wish my senior portraits had this much style, back in the day.

Many poignant photos, from the week, can be found here.

Yoga is all well and good, but I don't know about yoga with goats.

Sending you off into the weekend with this musical selection, straight from my Dad.
Have a good one!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for phone calls.  Well, not the telemarketing kind, but the kind where you have great conversation with a friend or loved one miles away.  Yesterday I took a moment and called my Dad.  It's good to catch up, every few days, and know what's going on, hear the dog bark, and the general news of their neighborhood.

What are you thankful for today?  Link up and let me know!

And, We're Off!

The weekend might have been slow, but we are off to a quick start for our summer.  Everyone seems to have a project happening at the same time.  My son is using every minute of his free time to work on his knife making business.  The above photo is one we worked on to use for business cards, etc....

Secret Agent Farmer Man is on tractor rehab, as the machine isn't working as it should.  I think this is always the case with farm machinery.  Fencing has been replaced, with some new voltage added!

The girl of the house is recovering nicely and is eating normal foods, though slowly.  She coached first base last night for t-ball.  She said one little boy ran to first base and immediately wanted to show her the snails he had in his pocket.  Apparently he wouldn't run to second base until she took a strong interest in them.

As for me....well, I will be taking on this project very soon.  However, all thoughts of projects went out the window today when our English Pointer ran out of the cow pasture with more manure on him than I had ever seen.....ever seen.  It was even down in his ears..

*sigh*

What a way to start off the summer!

Slow Sunday

Quiet times here at the farmette this weekend.  The girl of the house had oral surgery on Friday and the weekend has been full of smoothies, soft foods, and limited conversation.  It has also been full of baking, planting flowers, setting up fountains, and enjoying a free schedule.

Some softball later in the week and I see a new weed eater in my future.

School's out for summer!

I couldn't get him to look my way.  Shy, I guess.....

If you know someone who has a bible verse for every situation, you will enjoy this...

Looking for a cat to adopt?  Here is the one for you.

If you are hitting up NYC anytime soon, might I suggest one of these tasty snacks?

Sending you off into the weekend with some Chris Stapleton...what a voice.

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for the heat.  I know, I know what kind of thing is that to be thankful for....however, it means summertime fun, flowers, fresh garden tomatoes, and day trips here and there.  The ladies in the photo sure know how to cool off when the temperatures soar.  Taken a couple of days ago, they were soaking right around noontime.

What are you thankful for?  Shout it out, link it up, and let me know!

Victuals

A sweet treat arrived in my mailbox today.  I have been waiting for the cookbook, "Victuals", to arrive for a few days.  Published several months ago, author Ronni Lundy aims to show Appalachia some love with stories and recipes that showcase all that is good and true about this region.

The book covers the typical topics of beans, corn, and greens, but also the deep history and traditions that go along with these foods.  Summertime moments spent breaking beans underneath a shade tree in my Mama Bird's front yard came to mind while reading this book. Getting a, "mess", of beans on a newspaper spread in your lap to work with, all the while talking and working.   Also, the white cornbread from my Grannie Lucille's kitchen.  Not the sweet, yellow kind found in most grocery stores.  Cornbread with flavor, and a bit of bitterness, that I don't find much anymore.

I could go on and on about the food in this book, but I should also point out that it is as much a history book as a food book.   History that points out the negative stereotypes that go along with Appalachia.  Not only do we have the stereotypes working today, we also have socio-economic problems plaguing this region.  It's refreshing to read something so positive, and so true about a region so fine.

It doesn't hurt that many of the photographs look like they were taken down the road from my own farm.

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to my Mom today.  I think one doesn't realize the sacrifice and hard work it takes to be a parent....until you become one yourself.  In this photo, she and I were having our passport photos taken, to join my Dad in England.

"Motherhood is a great honor and privilege, yet it is also synonymous with servant hood.  Everyday women are called upon to selflessly meet the needs of their families.  Whether they are awake at night nursing a baby, spending their time and money on less than grateful teenagers, or preparing meals, moms continuously put others before themselves."

Friday Randoms

Hey, it's Friday!  Woot!

I will confess a love of dill pickle chips, but may not all of these.

I can't deny these would have been a fun idea when my children were young.

In celebration of impending Mother's Day, here are a few recipes from moms that we can all enjoy.  I will take the caramel brownies please, and thank you.

Leaving you with The Fabulous Thunderbirds this Friday.  Enjoy!

Thankful Thursday

Thankful this Thursday for a whole hodgepodge of items.  Thankful for a sweet neighbor who has tomato plants for me.  Thankful for the happy moments that power me through tough times.  Thankful for co-workers during this last, crazy week of school, that make me laugh and commiserate during toy day, bouncy house day, field day, etc.....

Thankful that the week moves forward, no matter what!

What are you thankful for this week?
Let me know!

Observations from the Week

It's only Tuesday......

Lady cows can really smash a fence when they want to be on the other side.

A dog asleep in a patch of sunshine is a happy dog.

Four more days of school left.

Being a passenger in the Jeep with the teenage girl driver wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Sometimes things just don't work out as planned....big things and little things.

Life is still good.

In the Land of Green

Things are greening up around the farmette.  Mulch is being shoveled, plants are being planted, and more flowers are blooming.  Our little maple trees that were planted last year are doing well.

The farmer man and teenage girl were out on the golf cart checking fencing issues this afternoon.

Last season I planted the smallest Lilac bush ever known to man and it bloomed!  Three small blossoms and here I was afraid it wouldn't survive.

Our week of rain made for some soggy times, but Mother Nature is using it to her advantage.

It is finally the time for flowers.  Thank goodness....

Tomorrow is the Kentucky Derby.  Unlike other years, there is no clear favorite this time around.  Check out the horses here and let me know your pick.

These cookbooks might pique your interest.  The Appalachian award winner will be in my kitchen, soon.

Leaving you with some Delbert McClinton for the weekend.
Enjoy!

Thankful Thursday

This Thursday I am thankful for teamwork.  You know how you are relaxing after supper and someone yells that the cows are out?  Around here, everyone in the house dashes out to lend a hand.

Teamwork makes the dream work!

Cows back in the gate in record time.  What are you thankful for today?
Shout it from the roof top!

Bring on the Ball

This past weekend was spent in Owensboro, Kentucky.  We were there for a softball tournament of statewide proportions.

While we didn't win like we thought we would, it was a positive experience in its own right.

I will be the owner of one of these wagons pretty soon.  All of my entertainment/softball mom stuff will fit into it so nicely.

The girl of the house did a fine job pitching

We did manage a stop at Moonlite BBQ.  I sampled everything, including the mutton, burgoo, and lemon drop pie. Highly recommend.... all of it.
