Southern Gourmet
It's the kind of place you just might pass up, but precisely the kind of place you shouldn't. Before arriving in Oxford, Mississippi, I had heard of Mama Jo and her famous cooking. After all Andrew Zimmern loved this place, and that was all the recommendation I needed.
It doesn't look like much from the front and about the same on the inside. Just standard tables and chairs. No fuss, no decor, and no frills.
But, the food? Oh. my. goodness.
A small group of ladies fill a tiny steam table of goodness each day. The food varies, but fried chicken is a daily staple. They plate up your choices in the typical, "meat and three", plate. Here I had fried cornbread, mashed potatoes/gravy, and red beans/rice. The sweet tea was self serve with a bucket of ice to scoop from, if you wanted any.
The flavor was outstanding and the ladies were so kind and generous. After that fried chicken I didn't need any lip gloss for the rest of the day.

What a lovely place! Your plate looks delicious (love fried chicken, too!) + I love the sign over the wall frame... "With God all things are possible." (Matthew 19:26) What a beautiful, powerful message for all who eat there!

ReplyDeleteMMMM looks real good, love to discover places like this
ReplyDeleteI love those kinds of places...So local...so down home.
ReplyDeleteIf Andrew gives it 2 thumbs up it's got to be good. Love his take on food.
This made me think of a working trip to New Orleans and our breakfast at Mama's. Oh my so quaint but the food was delicious and I love your comment about no lip gloss for the rest of the day..My kind of food...(:0)

It looks tasty but very filling!
ReplyDeleteLOL... well that food sounds absolutely divine. Those are life's little treasures to be sought out, the folks and their food.
ReplyDeleteI expect the further north you get from Mason-Dixon, the less likely you are to find cornbread.
ReplyDeleteYum! Sounds like a place for the tv show - Diners, Drive Ins and Dives!
ReplyDeletePlaces like this one with no frills and just plain good food are always our favorites as well. The only thing fancy about most fancy food places is the high cost.
ReplyDeleteI can’t help but wonder if that lip gloss was considered kissable by the one who mattered ;)). The meal looks delicious and that was for sure one of those times when a posh atmosphere doesn’t matter (as are the majority of meals out for us).
ReplyDeleteI love independent cafes and such.. there is so much more personality than those big chain places!! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
ReplyDeleteOh my, my tummy says gimmie gimmie

ReplyDeleteWhat a cool place. I would love to eat there.
ReplyDeleteIt a;ll looks so good! I never learned the skill of making good fried chicken so it is always a treat to find it on a menu.
ReplyDeleteI love the last line.. chicken and lip gloss.. :D
ReplyDeletehehehehe, i LOVE places just like this, they always serve the best food. we have a few seafood places around here that actually look a little scary BUT serve the best, freshest seafood you have ever eaten. i am always on the lookout for good fried chicken. we had sandwiches recently, drizzled with honey butter, they were so good!! finger, lickin' good!!!
ReplyDeleteYUM . . .
ReplyDelete(Liked the lip gloss comment!)
Nice
ReplyDeleteThe food looks terrific but I sure hate to see styrofoam cups and disposable plates. It is way past the time for us to stop producing garbage.
