All our clothes are either dried outside on the line, or on a Victorian pulley airer in the garage. Despite our climate, Scotland is a land of clothes lines. When we did a house exchange with a family from Los Angeles, we looked in vain for a clothes line in their garden. We couldn't believe that there wasn't one, with all that sunshine, and with the city having electricity brownouts due to excess demand.Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11269887100694066103noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864190975528857884.post-14516711079249648032011-06-29T11:29:02.722-04:002011-06-29T11:29:02.722-04:00I wish I could... :-)I wish I could... :-)cieldequimperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04541298876304462514noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864190975528857884.post-70488810655236150602011-06-29T11:03:47.768-04:002011-06-29T11:03:47.768-04:00Nice post and I love your commentary your Gran Luc...Nice post and I love your commentary your Gran Lucy was a smart woman. The first house that ...I agree.... Hang up to dry.

The first house that I owned was fairly modern and had a space for a dryer or dishwasher. My Mother didn't have either so it was difficult to choose which one to install. When it was time to move house years later, I hadn't purchased either and instead the space was used in the duration as a kitchen pedal waste bin.
The current house I own has a space behind an enclosed cupboard door in the utility room for a dryer ... but I tend to use the space for fold away sun chairs for the nearby back garden.J_on_tourhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05469200077815953611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864190975528857884.post-71412835416910118312011-06-28T14:49:14.929-04:002011-06-28T14:49:14.929-04:00I love my clothesline too :) I think I just like t...I love my clothesline too :) I think I just like the walking outside part-if forces me to stop for a minute and look around : )Tipperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11714281090985487356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864190975528857884.post-85634020984874797332011-06-28T09:52:50.266-04:002011-06-28T09:52:50.266-04:00Oh, I have been begging the hubby for a clotheslin...Oh, I have been begging the hubby for a clothesline ever since we moved out in the country! Maybe I should see if I can manage it myself! I remember playing at my mother's feet as she hung out the wash--then as I got older, I was able to do it myself before we got a dryer. I love the fresh smell, and yes, the clothes DO last longer! Reminds me of a funny story about my mother's unmentionables hanging on the line--hard to have many secrets from the neighbors when your wash is hanging out for all to see! lol Maybe I should write about it!
VStickhorsecowgirlshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04167094045033324094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864190975528857884.post-68803501411745732232011-06-28T02:46:01.798-04:002011-06-28T02:46:01.798-04:00I personally think clothes off the line smell much...I personally think clothes off the line smell much more fresh than dryer clothes. I love that someone as young as you has been taught how to do this for the best results. We lived in the mountains for 7 yrs. when our boys were young and I hung out our clothes.(We had no electricity for 2 of those years) I too loved the sheets...the feel and the smell. Hubby always complained a little about the towels too, but I love the way they feel.
Your pictures brought back memories of my Mom too, who always hung out her clothes and taught me how to do it properly.
My favorite memory was handing her clothes pins when I was little.
Thanks for pulling a little at my heartstrings with this post and the wonderful pictures of clothes blowing on the line.Beverly @ My Sew Sweet Studiohttp://www.mysewsweetstudio.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3864190975528857884.post-77027438636484490822011-06-26T10:20:16.524-04:002011-06-26T10:20:16.524-04:00With the cattle and the flies that come with them,...With the cattle and the flies that come with them, there were not too many good days to hang clothes, so we no longer have a clothes line outside. We do hang up some work clothes down in the basement, but I have some great memories of clothes lines from my childhood. It was the unofficial badminton net, and other times it was the foundation of a tent. I also remember scrambling to get the clothes off the line if a storm blew up or the wind changed direction (we lived on a dirt road!) In fact, she has insisted on doing this, and hanging things just as you described.
